VIDEO INSTRUCTION CREATION GUIDELINES
CREATING VIDEOS
Short videos devoted to single topics have been found to be very powerful. This is most of the secret behind the successful Kahn Academy.
These guidelines will help you create videos that are short, to the point, and powerful.
Should we call you, "Cecil B.?".
Content is:
-
focused on instructional objective(s) that is communicated to the learner
-
optimally 5-8 minutes in length
-
presented using your program's theme (if your program doesn't have a theme, you should!)
-
visually oriented, using clearly viewed images, concept maps, diagrams, clear graphs, simple tables, etc. not just narrated text
Presenter will:
-
be positive, genuine, and approachable in demeanor
-
be focused and motivational about learning the topic
-
convey understanding of student position as a learner
-
keep an appropriate pace throughout presentation
-
vary inflection/intonation to retain listener interest
-
refrain from using filler words (um, you know, like, etc.) and verbal tics
Technical Considerations:
-
audio quality should be clear and free of background noise
-
use pointer or annotation to mark places of interest on the slide without obscuring information (do not just underline text)
-
completed in advance (according to agreed-upon schedule for development) of the scheduled delivery to allow for posting time
